Prescribed Burning at Southeast Banks

Last year, Westervelt Ecological Services reported on a prescribed burn at their Pensacola Bay Mitgation Bank. This year, WES is at it again!  This time a prescribed burn took place at two banks, Pensacola Bay Mitigation Bank and St. Marks Mitigation Bank.

The prescribed burn at Pensacola Bay Mitigation Bank was a cooperative burn with Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection’s Yellow Marsh Preserve.  The burn was adjacent to I-10 and roughly 210 acres inside the fire breaks.  Pictures below highlight the equipment used to burn in this coastal bog.  650 dozers were parked on the “high ground” nearby, but otherwise it was low-ground pressure equipment doing the heavy lifting in this habitat type.  This burn is a good example of showing how private/public partnerships can come together to meet common conservation objectives.
